]> Junior Staff Application for NBTSC 2003 /Office use only:/ Date rec'd___________, Notes: -NBTSC 2003 Junior Staff Application- Your name:__________________________________________________________ Address: __________________________________ __________________________________ __________________________________ Phone #__________________________________________________ Email address___________________________________________ Your age as of August 25, 2003 ____________________ Your birthdate ___________________ What sessions of NBTSC have you attended previously? _______________________________________________- Before applying for a jr. staff position at NBTSC, here are a few things you should know: It's basically a volunteer/worktrade position. We pay you $150 to help cover your travel expenses. You don't pay anything to come to camp. Usually junior staffers work about 45 hours during the 8 days of camp, plus up to 8 more hours on the day before camp starts. If an emergency or strange situation comes up, we'll need you to work a bit more. It's often fairly gruntish work, like pots-and-pans scrubbing, helping the cooks, supervising campers' chores, running errands (short ones and long ones), stuff like that. Not very glamorous. Jr. staffers are needed from the morning or afternoon of the day before camp starts until about 5 p.m. on the last day of camp. It is very important that most or all junior staffers have valid drivers' licenses. We may not be able to hire non-drivers. It is essential that junior staffers come to camp to serve, and that they keep their eyes open for ways that they can help, even when they do not have a specific task assigned to them. If you want to get away with doing the bare minimum, this is not a good position for you-you'll find that senior staffers resent you and, probably, that you leave feeling bad about yourself or your camp experience. Junior staff is kind of an in-between role at camp-you're not exactly campers, and you're not exactly senior staffers. For example, you won't attend most staff meetings, because they're almost too big even without junior staffers, and because we discuss confidential information about campers. We'll do what we can to help you feel at home in your new role, and you can participate in an advisee group if you'd like to, but it's important that you come ready to take charge of your own experience and actively reach out to people for what you want and need (and can give). We really love and really need our junior staffers-thank you for applying! Which session(s) do you prefer? Please circle. * I (August 25-Sept 1) * II (September 4-12) * III West Virginia (Sept 24-Oct 2) * Doesn't matter Would it be impossible for you to make it to any session? Which? ________ Please describe your experience and skills in each of the following areas. Use additional paper if necessary: Babysitting/childcare: Outdoor skills/outdoor leadership: Cooking or food preparation (especially for large groups): Do you have a valid drivers' license? _______ When were you first licensed to drive? _________________ If you don't have a license now, will you by the start of NBTSC 2003? ____________ (We will count on you if you say yes. In fact, if you say "yes" and we hire you but then you don't end up getting your license, we may need to give your job to someone else.) Have you been in any accidents, when you were driving? If so, please explain briefly and give the date(s). Have you received any traffic tickets in the past 3 years? If so, please briefly describe each one and give approximate dates. Could you pick up early arriving campers in Eugene and drive them to their hotel, and run other errands that involve transporting campers? _________ Would you be willing to run other errands as well? ________________ Would it be possible for you to bring your own car to NBTSC? ________________ If yes, how many passengers can it carry (in addition to the driver)? __________________ Are you certified in any of the following? If so, please write in expiration dates. First aid__________ Advanced first aid _____________ CPR____________ lifeguard___________________ If you answered no to any/all of the above, are you willing to get certified in any before NBTSC? Which?__________________________ Do you think you would do a good job of supervising a bus ride from Camp Myrtlewood to Eugene (or vice versa), and helping people to get on their planes, trains, etc.? How about getting them organized on the first day of camp, in order to get on the buses to head to Camp Myrtlewood? Any relevant experience or personal qualities? Have you traveled frequently yourself? Would you do a good job of communicating with worried or confused parents? If you worked at Session 1, could you possibly stay in Eugene an extra couple days to help organize campers on the buses for Session 2? We would provide a place to stay, and would either pay you extra or else have you do a lesser amount of work during Session 1. Would you like to help run an advisee group? Do you have any skills, traits, or experience that would help you do a good job of that? For sessions 1 and 2 we will probably assign each junior staffer to a specific role-either assistant cook, assistant to the dish queen, or Maya's logistical assistant. Which would you prefer, and why? Would any of these positions be unacceptable to you? What other skills, experiences, or qualities do you have that would make you a helpful junior staffer? Why do you want to work at NBTSC? Any other reason we should hire you? Name 2 people we can contact for references. Include their phone numbers and email addresses if possible, and tell what context you know them from. Deadline for applications is February 28, 2003. We'll let you know by March 31 if we have a spot for you.
