A barnraising is where you get a group of people together, and take turns explaining what each of you needs to make your dreams fly (i.e., a Japanese teacher, a pet turtle, 20 tons of lumber, an old computer, or just anything you are having trouble finding on your own). Then you share your resources with each other, and you will generally find someone in the group who wants to give you a pet turtle or who knows someone who knows someone who speaks Japanese and is itching for someone to teach.

Wind is looking for...

  • A nice herbalist/wise woman/man somewhere on the west coast, Washington or Oregon, to follow around and learn from, September-December this year (2001)
  • People to do street theatre with on weekends of September-December, in Seattle
  • Advice on doing street theatre in Seattle
  • Somewhere to stay on weekends, September-December (I cook, sing, and entertain small children for ridiculously long lengths of time!)

Thanks oodles...

Hiya everyone!

I am in search of fellow travelers who are interested in going to Spain with me this October! Come on, it'll be fun!

I'm planning to spend a week or two in England (I have family there, but if anyone's interested in joining me there, that'd be great too), then continue on to Madrid, Toledo, and possibly other as-of-yet-undecided parts of Spain. I'm going mainly to see a particular painting (Las Meninas by Diego Velazquez, ask me to gush about it sometime), so I plan to be in the Prado museum quite a bit, but I'm open to exploring other things too...

Email me if you're interested in coming, or can suggest fun things to do in Spain and England--emerie at nbtsc.org. Looking in particular for individuals who speak better Spanish than I do! -Emerie

I want to travel around the world with only a backpack and the clothes on me. I want to work and/or study abroad, I want to experience the idiosincracies of many cultures. I want to get the fuck away from this house, this town, even my family (though I love them a lot). I want to run away.

However, since I am quite ignorant on how to go about this (although I have traveled around the US and Canada, the rest of the world is a different story), I have some questions. Maybe you know some good books that will answer these. Have any of you traveled outside of the US/Canada? How did you begin? How shall I begin? I'm thinking I'll end up beginning in South America, as I have friends who have family in places like Chile and Brazil. Should I begin in Europe instead? Hmmm. How should I travel? How many risks should I take in unfamiliar places?

If you have any sparks of wisdom regarding this matter, please enlighten me to them. In return, I can teach you:

  • Some Aikido / self-defense (if we meet in person)
  • Writing and grammer skills
  • How to pack practically
  • Basic piano

--Eireann

    • I've looked through a few Lonely Planet "on a shoestring" guides, and my sister used a couple of them when she traveled in Central america and Europe. Those seem to have some/ a lot of practical information you would appreciate, especially on how to travel cheaply and safely. They're definitely on Amazon.com.. love, Mari
    • Risks: I don't know that you can plan your style here, rather it emerges as you go and you learn to live with it, and try to streach yourself here and there.

Hey, gang!

Robyn and Tessa are planning a giant summer trip! Exciting, ain't it? We would be even more excited if we could figure out precisely where this trip will go! So anyway, we're wondering if anyone has a farm-like place we could help keep running for the latter half of June, and all of July, or if you know somebody that does. We're pretty butch girls, or we will be shortly, we don't eat much, etc etc, and we'd love to spend our summer hanging out with some cool unschoolers! If you know of any way you could help us out, please (pretty please with sugar on top) drop us a line at either tessa at nbtsc.org or thatrobyn at nbtsc.org

Thank you all ever so much, and we love you to death!

--Robyn and Tessa

Hi I'm Emily, I'm the one Rosie was asking about apprenticeships for and I'm still looking for them. I'm also looking for a place to live in the Bay Area, possibly related to an apprenticeship. So if any of you have any ideas or know of places I should check out I'd really appreciate hearing about them! I'm leaving for CA (from NY) january 10th and arriving january 13th..... taking the train. (The first and last time I took a train crosscountry was to go to NBTSC in '97.) thanks so much! Emily (Ami)

I would absolutely love it if some bored individuals with too much free time would be willing to take a serious look at http://www.smokylake.com/Christy/ and give me ideas for improving it... organizational things, or suggestions on anything.

- Christy

Hey y'all~~

  • Hi Jessica

I don't know of anything specific right now but I live on the east coast and am also looking for meaningful work with a similar focus. you could contact the self education foundation through their website. Adriel who works with them is a former NBTS camper herself and I bet they'd be happy to hear from you. I've got my eyes and ears open and I'll let you know of anything else I hear. Emily (Ami)

I'll start.

I really want to travel to some country with a good deal of poverty like india and help work in a childrens orphanage.. I don't know if anybody has any links to anything like this-or any good ideas of places to get funding. I also want to do a glassblowing internship, I live near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania;) love- Rachel

  • One of my friends went to India with her mom. They took a daypack each. She might be good to talk to about general travel. If you're interested, email me at emma at members.limitless.org and I'll give you her email (she's a student in Oaxaca right now!). - Emma
  • http://homepage.mac.com/heatherknox/ megan knox, and her mom, are in india right now, volunteering and traveling. they post updates on the status of their trip on that page. if you want to know stuff, they'd be the ones to talk to. - cory

Rachel! Check out GoNomad.com. It's this wonderful website I found that has all sorts of resources for volunteering in Europe and Asia... there is one project where you can work in an orphanage in India, does that sound like your type of thing? Hope this helps, and I'll email you as well --Eireann

I would really love to put together a book of poems, essays, stories, etc based on NBTSC. If you have anything you've already written, or would like to type up a memory of camp, etc, pleasepleaseplease e-mail it/them to me at toodamnperky at nbtsc.org.

I have had expirience putting together books of things before. I've made several little books of my own poetry for my family. This will probably be very simple, just paper hand sewn together. I would love to make many copies available at camp next year. Let's put a deadline at May 1, 2001 so I'll have time to put everything together.

I really really really want to do this folks... send me stuff! -marina

Marina--I'd be interested in helping compile the book and submitting and in fact, i would be willing to give you what I read in the talent show--at least one of them, possibly both. let me know. roo at hoosierlink.net ~Jasmine~

Ok, I'm interested in taking a self-defense class or two, because I think it would be a good idea and I'd generally feel better doing stuff on my own if I knew how to kick peoples' butts. :) Ahem. Don't mind me too much...I'm in a flippant and facetious mood at the moment. So, what I'd like opinions on is...should I take a martial arts class, and if so, what kind? Or should I just look for something calling itself a self-defense class, or...what? I'm clueless. Thanks! - Emma

  • I personally recommend Aikido. It makes you much more aware of your own body, and others bodies. If I got in a fight, I'm sure I'd know exactly how to hurt my opponent the most without getting very hurt myself. :) Aikido also has a great mental philosophy. If you can find a women's self defence class that would be great too. Hope this helped. -marina
  • I recommend Aikido as well, I've been taking it for awhile and it's done a lot for me. I can be flexible in body without having a lot of muscles, and it's good for women because it emphasizes hip strength. It also helps build your inner energy and makes you more balanced and centered. -Eireann
  • Aikido is cool...I took it from age 7-9, and even then I remember it being very centering. (And quite a lot of fun!) But if you really want to learn to kick some butt *grin* I recommend taking a women's self-defense course with a padded assailant who you can actually practice your moves on. (It's kinda freaky, but also really amazing, to be able to strike full-force.) There are some national organizations (I think Model Mugging is national--check 'em out) and also more local ones. I organized a teen girl's self-defense class for two teachers in '99 and got tuition free in exchange, and it was really incredible. Good luck!
  ~Rosie
  • There's a method of self-defence training for women called Wenlido that's quite awsome and impowering. It draws a lot from martial arts pholosophy and techniques and is really woman centered. I got a lot our of it. Model mugging is also incredible, if you can find it. I watched some vidio-taped graduation demonstrations of Maya's, and it's awsome scary realistic stuff. I think there's a program going in San Fransico ...that's all I know at the moment (though I fully intend tohave more informaation on this myself at some point, coz I really want to do some. I'll pass along anything that comes my waay.)

--Tessa

I'm writing a one-act play for this Young Playwrights class that's going to be read onstage in March. It's a retelling of the fairy tale Rapunzel. I'd love it if anyone wanted to read it and comment and offer suggestions. It's about 20 pages long, and I can e-mail it either as a Word document or a text file. E-mail me if you'd like to read it! Or if you'd like to visit Santa Barbara for a month or so and act in it! :) --marina

I'd like to get more experience training animals. I have trained dogs, cats, and equines before, but I'd like to gain experience with animals I've yet to work with (like birds, reptiles, ferrets, etc) as well as more experience with companion animals.

I use humane training methods and I use primarily positive reinforcement whenever possible.

If you want more info, then email Kitkat4208 at aol.com, and put "Training" in the subject line so I don't accidentally delete it.

Is there anybody who will help me learn Italian? I just started and it would be really helpful if somebody would write me (simple) e-mails in Italian or chat with me on AIM or MSN messenger. My e-mail is arabhorses_rock at hotmail.com, and my AIM nickname is buzzbabe05.

-)
