Foot Notes

Footnotes, aaah, the long, glorious tradition[1]

In The Beginning[2] there was the developer, and the developer was happy. Then $diety[3] created Administrator, and the developer had a superior, but was content, and the Administrator was happy. They all lived in a settlement at the foot of might Mt. Majordomo.

Shortly thereafter, $diety created users. At first, they were few, and they were knowledgeable, but shortly thereafter, they entered a jungle[4] and found a tree bearing fruit[5], they tasted the fruit[6] and became lusers.

The lusers returned to their settlement at the foot of Mt. Majordomo and tried in vain to use the System. It wouldn't work. They poked it. They prodded it. It became incomprehesible to them, so they hit it with sticks. Administrator came out and asked "what is the matter?".

A brave luser, who had only tasted a bit of the fruit replied "We do not understand the System, teach us!".

All the other lusers cried out "Me too! Me too!", except for a dissenter who mocked them for saying such bland agreement. A bitter debate ensued among the less enlightened lusers[7], making the room unbearable to Administrator and the lone remaining "non-l" user.

Administrator took the user to his provate abode, deep within the settlement and the System, and trained him in the ways of the System, and encouraged him to keep in mind his life as an luser, so he might understand the luser enough to teach them the ways of the System. Thus the user became Tech Support.

Tech Support was given a job at a desk, and Developer saw him each day on his way into work. Administrator was bothered less by the lusers, and was content. Soon, however, Tech Support became sullen with the blunt stupidity of the lusers. He went to Administrator and complained that the System was too hard to use for the lusers.

Administrator looked long and hard at Tech Support and finally shrugged. It was not his place to change the system, though, and so he appealed to $deity. $diety responded by issuing amemorandum to Developer, and so Developer began to write more of the System to easier to learn.

Soon, the lusers overwhelmed Tech Support with their stupidity and besat Administrator, who took on some of the job. Developer continued his work, cursing all the while.

Soon they became tired of this, and asked $diety to help. He responded by giving Tech Support a place to vent his feelings, alt.techsupport.recovery and Administrator one as well, alt.sysadmin.recovery. There they vented their anger and frustration by writing many posts about their lusers and included many humourous footnotes[9] and there was rejoicing in the land.

[1] Such as it is.

[2] 1970-ish.

[3] that, for the non-technical, being "God" or your favorite diety.

[4] Two by two into the jungle, and soon they numbered more

[5] This was what became the tree of knowledge.

[6] The tree gained it's knowledge by draining the knowledge of the users.

[7] This was the first "flame war"; the argument ended in squabbling and much taunting[8].

[8] such as "You, sir, remind me of Hitler".
