How Do You Go About Pronouncing That

If you are tired of people pronouncing something wrong and would like to tell them how it really goes, write it in here. Or if you are wondering how to go about pronouncing something, ask here, and chances are someone will tell you.

Hey, does anyone know how to pronounce "Reine"? As in Norm-the-comic's wife's name? It's in some name books, but they never tell you how to pronounce anything (apparently because they think people want to be able to choose the pronunciation).

--Emma (who is a total stranger to NBTSC wiki-wiki-ness, and is not that other person with her name who seems to spend time here)

  • Heya... it might be pronounced "Rey-nah"-- another spelling of that name is Reina, which means Queen in Spanish. --Mari

Yo, Just in case you're still wondering, Mari is Mah- ree... (latin vowels please, hold the "uh" in "Marie"...) And, ahem, Marisa (at least MINE) is Mah-ree-sah. It's not that I don't like the name Marissa or Marrissa, or what-have-you. But they're just not MINE and I really hate being called those, although I do make exceptions for approximately two people in my life-- both of which I love tooo much to correct every time I see them.

--Mari

Alot of people have wondered about my last name, Wordhouse-Dykema. So here is goes. The OFFICIAL pronunciation of Rachael Wordhouse-Dykema's last name, written by yours truely, Rachael Wordhouse-Dykema.

Wordhouse, pronounced like it reads. Word. House. Dykema. No, this is not DICK-EE-MA. like most telemarketers like to pronounce it. Its die-keh-ma. die-keh-ma. But whenever I tell people this they spread the syllabels out too much and stretch the word, making it sound funny. it is NOT die...keh...ma, its die-keh-ma. just squish 'em all together.

Did that make sense?

  • Ah yes, a Dutch name? I'm Dutch too. (Holtrop--which is actually a German name, but yes, I am pure Dutch; go figure.)

Ok, how do you pronounce Oregon?

Non-Oregonians reveal their out of state citizenship by saying "Ore-uh-GAHN." It is correctly pronounced "ORE-uh-ginn" or "ORE-gin".

  • I thought it was just Canadians who said it wrong... --Adrian

Marina would like to announce that "genre" is pronounced jen AIR. Thank you.

  • But why would Marina want to do that?

Because Marina is an enlightened member of the Genre (jen-air) Club. This club has all of three members so far! Come, join us, add your name to the list of revolutionaries!

  • tenay
  • roya
  • marina
    • It is not!

gen·re Pronunciation Key (zhän're) (the 'e' at the end is supposed to be upsidedown) I looked at the Pronunciation Key and the "zh" is pronounced like the bold letters in the following words: vi s ion, plea s ure, gara ge .

n. A type or class: “Emaciated famine victims... on television focused a new genre of attention on the continent” (Helen Kitchen).

A category of artistic composition, as in music or literature, marked by a distinctive style, form, or content: “his six String Quartets... the most important works in the genre since Beethoven's [time]”. A realistic style of painting that depicts scenes from everyday life.

Eireann is pronounced like "Erin", although if you want to be fancy you can roll the r. My nickname, "Eire", is pronounced "Air-ah". What my name is not: I-rene, air-ee-ann, air-ee, air, i-lene, or Ira.

Charlie's Guide to Pronouncing French:

1: Take the first half of the word and say it up your nose. 2: Suddenly become too pretentious to go on moving your mouth and just make some sort of pucker for the amout of time it would take to say the second half of the word.
