Napoleon’s Trip
Have a nice trip…see you next fall…
Once upon a time there was a chap named Napoleon. He made himself emperor of Europe, and he made his wife Empress.
He loved fighting and winning, and he was good at it. She loved people and dressing up, and she was good at that. As such he had conquered Naples, Spain, and Denmark. She had conquered the hearts of all the French people.
Napoleon made his brothers kings of all these conquered countries. Too bad they didn’t know how to be kings…too bad the people in those countries hated them…
One day when he was getting old, he realised he did not have an heir. How was this marvelous dynasty he had created ever to continue? Oh dear. He looked at his beautifull wife, Josephine. Empress Josephine to you. She was charming and pretty and just…perfect, he thought. She hadn’t given him a son. What a foolish woman. So he divorced her.
He cried that night.
And all France was not happy. How could their great Napoleon divorce their beloved Josephine?
No one knows if Napoleon ever actually had a son. There was so much bed-hopping going on in Paris at the time that no one actually knew for certain whose child was whose. But his next wife, the Queen Marie-Louise, did have a son. And they named him Napoleon II.
Napoleon was very fond of fighting. He was always off in battle somewhere. Now he was to fight his greatest and most terrible battle, at Waterloo. All Europe was there. And all Europe watched as the undefeatable Emperor was finally defeated. They took away his crown, and they sent him to an island. He died.
