| Poem For Becky |
i wrote this today as part of a writing project. (becky & roya...you know the one. *winks*)
#5 for Becky
- smile a star darling
- cry a river
- don't wait
- don't wait for me
- if you knew
- the light that you hold
- the life that you sometimes scorn
- is made all the more precious
- by its impermanence
- no more need to say "i love you"
- than to say i'm alive
- it is a thing too obvious
- to need stating.
you are
the fairytale of a lifetime, dear
getting drunk on the moon
like you could squeeze
the stories out of cement
and the feeling
from behind a dozen eyelash jails.
words claw from inside my ears
as they listen to
your magical voice beg them
to dance, and they have never had
more fun.

the girl with the angel voice
and furrowed brow as she reads
her fingers hold on to the paper
I can see that her knuckles are white
she tells tales of ugly girls
and ghost boys who aren't there
at times she grows quiet
as if giving us time to let it sink in
just when we think it's over
the voice that has us in a trance
begins again, telling how
the heroine rescues her knight from his tower
her voice is soothing, and it calms me
it calms me like a beautiful lullabye
but I'm resisting the urge to sleep
I want to soak up every word she says
Drip, drip, drip
was the water before us
splash, ripple, change
was what we created
the stones formed indentations on our bare legs
and there were no mesquiots as our fingertips
bent to touch the water.
the circles from the stones we threw
opened our minds and hearts and mouths
and we became more
than two girls by a creek
mesmerized with patterns
we were the patterns.
'life' she said
' what about it?' i answered
and we continue to sit in silence.
'so.....'
'so.......'
and we smile.
'what embarasses you?'
and i blush
we laugh
the circles continue through the water
and sand
and into our minds
coming back to before.
we've grown since then and we know it
where do the circles stop?
