| Story Time |
Start. In a building, in a town.
She smiled softly, sadly, and faded into the night. Walking out of that place she stopped suddenly in the street, and leaned against a doorway. Silently she stood there crying for eleven minutes, then composed herself and continued walking. Reaching home, she wiped from her mind all traces of the place she had been and prepared to cook dinner. Noises of people faded gently in from different rooms as she searched for egg, onion, pepper, pan. Crack. Slice. Flip. Eat. Tearing thoughtfully through layers of food, searching for nothing but satisfaction. Satisfaction for an instant. Close your eyes, sigh. Breathe back in. Look at the dirty ceiling. Put away dinner. The silent phone keeps time in this dance without melody. Go to the bedroom. Swallow eleven sleeping pills and shut out the light.
Epilogue.
Her soft, soft skin was all he would remember, afterwards. And this was afterwards, he supposed. Seeing your true love lying in a casket with her black hair neatly strewn about. He couldn’t help himself. Touch her face. You were so beautiful. And I never said a word. Walk out and down the street. Done.
