THERMIT

Thermit: made with powedered Aluminum, and a metallic oxide (usually iron oxide, AKA Rust) when placed in some sort of contaner, and ignited with a magnesium ribbon fuse, it wil produse enormous amounts of heat, and molten metal, usefull for welding large objects. thermit action is employed to extact chromium, manganese, and other metals from their oxides. --Oxford Visualized Chemistry.

  • So that's how you do it! I have a picture of a Thermite reaction in a chemistry book, and i always wanted to do it. How much of each, and where does one find magnesium ribbon fuses? Carrie, explosively
  • I do beleave it is 2 parts Aluminum powder, one part metal oxide, and for welding, one part, of whatever kind of metal you wish to melt, I may be incorect on this, so please do say so if I am wrong, as for magnesium ribbon, there is a slim chance that you could buy some from a chemistry suply compeny, or you can find old, VW engen blocks, (they made them out of Magnesium, for some reson) then you just make some shaveings... maybe use a chisle, or a knife, to cut it? --Ryland
