| The Change We Wish To See |
So my darling people there's a war going on right now. I know a lot of us are really sad, afraid, angry...and I hear a lot of us saying that we feel helpless. I do, but I can't be happy if I don't feel like I'm trying to do something, and the world could use our strong arms, good thoughts, wise words, and especially our revolutionary actions. So I want to start a brainstorm/barn-raising to discuss organizations, web-sites, books, alternative media, events, possible actions, various forms of resistance, vigil, awareness-raising, protest, and aid. Please please share your thoughts, input, suggestions, questions, etc.
- I know right now there are protests/vigils/student walkouts going on all across the country (especially in big capitals). I found a list of them at http://www.internationalanswer.org
- I visited http://www.rawa.org last night...a revolutionary Afghan women's organization which has been working for women's and human rights in Afghanistan since 1977. I think it's a good website which will tell you more about the history of the Afghan people, and the women in particular, and the concrete practices of the Taliban. They provide medical aid (to women and children within Afghanistan as well as to Afghan refugees in Pakistan), education, and more.
- Look out for independent media
radio shows, publications, etc. I can get my paws on it pretty easily in the bay area that's probably harder to do elsewhere. I listen to KPFA for my news... http://www.kpfa.org & I also read the regular newspapers to see what they say is going on and make comparisons.

"Why of course the people don't want war. Why should some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally the common people don't want war: neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."
