Urban Camp

why wait for someone else to organize a camp like event? we are fully capible of doing something our selves! (with a little help from our friends) so I found the start of this conversation on another page, and it seemed kind of out of place there, so it has been moved here!

Some specific thoughts I had:

If such a thing were to happen, I don't think it should be just "Not Back to School Camp Number Two." There's no need to replicate camp, and it would be absurd to try. This event/gathering/camp/whatever should be a unique venture (although I think Grace has come up with many great ideas in doing camp for five years, and we should definitely keep those in mind).

One obvious way it would be different is the location. This is the part of the idea I'm really liking: What if it were an Urban Camp? One thing we've got a higher concentration of over here is cities. Would it be possible to rent a big house or space in dorms or something and have that as a central living/gathering place? But we wouldn't stay confined to that place--we'd have the whole city as our camp! Workshops could happen either in the house or out at locations in the world. (Hey, if a group decided to do a play, it could be performed for the public!)

As for a specific location, I propose our nation's capital, Washington DC. For one thing, I live there and if I'm going to organize the thing then it seems practical. Also, it's a city with amazing resources. And I suppose it's fairly centrally located as well.

Now, I know there are some problems with having a camp in a city-- Costs more money, requires transportation (although the subway here is fantastic), perhaps makes the group less cohesive just because we wouldn't be all together all the time.... But if we're not trying to recreate NBTSC, I think there are so many exciting things possible in an Urban EastCoastCamp.

(update, check out partytime, for what Emerie has put together)

So, what do you think? Do you think something like this would work? Would you come? Would you help organize it? (I'm willing to be the main organizer but I think help would be good) Any other suggestions?

OOOOOHHHHH!!!!!! That sounds really cool! While I'm not much for LIVING in a city I don't mind visiting them and that just sounds really cool. As for coming or not that totally depends on work and money but If I could I would so. Yeah! It'd be totally cool! --Ruth
