Because I live near Matt H, and Spike, and Jessica Copi (jekissa), about 2 hours from Victor and all those crazy people up northern a little bit, any one else that lives in Redwood City, Menlo Park, Palo Alto, Mountain View, Sunnyvale, San Jose, San Francisco, Berkely, Oakland, and more are fairly easily accessable. And caltrain runs right through most of them!

-Name: Eira (that stream of consciousness, sarong wearing, nrrrd glasses donning chick who has a never ending adoration of guinea pigs)

-Place: Cincinnati, Ohio (c'mon, you know you want to see the city where Jerry Springer was once mayor...)

-Notice: a couple weeks. If you're taking Amtrak, give me about a month, so we can figure out a good time to get up to Toledo.

-How to get here: There's a Greyhound station about ten minutes from our apartment. And the Cincinnati airport is in Northern Kentucky, about twenty minutes from here. There's not a real Amtrak station in Cincy, but there's one in Toledo. That's about 6 hours north of Cincinnati, but my Mom and I visit Toledo at least once every month or two, so if you're taking Amtrak, don't worry, we'll figure something out!

-Why you want to visit me: we have a lovely futon you can rest your weary bones on. Our apartment is in this lovely old brick building. Our bathroom has a rubber ducky theme. We live in the artsy-bohemian-college part of Cincinnati (UC is in our backyard). On our street is all of the following: a coffeehouse, a meditteranean deli, a florist, tons of little trippy hippy stores that sell incense and candles and sarongs and crocheted halters, a very cheap burrito place, a drugstore, a cute little grocery store that has an olive bar, a Thai cafe, the arthouse movie theater, a little library, an independent bookstore and more! If you walk a couple more blocks, you hit even more coffeehouses and smoothie bars. There's tons of cool stuff to do in the city, and we have a pretty decent public transportation system. If you want to visit me (please! even if I barely knew you at camp, visit me anyway!) email me at eerieEira at yahoo.com

Name: "Mel" "Bo" "that wierd person" Townsend

Where: Idyllwild, CA

Notice: It depends on the length of the stay. If you let me know a decent amount ahead of time I'll take time off work so we can do interesting things.

How to get there: Now that could be a problem. Call me and we'll work it out.

Why would we want to visit you? Well why wouldn't you?! We can eat peanutbutter together and discuss the mysteries of the universe. Enough said.

name: Mical B-W the great

where: Port Townsend, Washington

notice: Two weeks

how to get here: amtrak, greyhound, airports, ect.

why would we wan't to visit you? because I'm not going to camp this year and I'm going to miss everone!

name: Ali

where St. Paul, MN

notice: a month at least.

how to get here: amtrak, greyhound, airports, walking, hitchhiking, clicking the ruby slipper three times and saying "there's no place like Ali's, there's no place like Ali's"

why would we want to visit you? Because I live with an unber-cool sidekick, Lotus, in a lovely log home with a pool and on a lake. (Okay, so we don't really get the lake part of it, more like the... boggy part, but hey.) And we could see FionaIsRad and hang out at the Mall of America and swap camp (hahah!) stories.

anything we should know? sure... no visits until next year, or whenever we finish unpacking everything in boxes. (This does not apply to Fiona or Franny, being as they live close and they're specal. Nanner.)

name: Jessica C. (aka Jekissa)

where: San Francisco, California.

notice: preferably a month, a few weeks is ok. I'd have to ask the parentals. and clean my room. email me. jspygirl at hotmail.com

how: well, there's the SFO airport, there's amtrack in oakland, and san fran. (...I think), and greyhound. Or you could walk..

why: Well, I'm cool!, I have a cuuuute kitty, my parents are cool, I have a nice backyard, I have good music, a windows98 in my room. Although its a dial-modem, the G3 in the living room has DSL, and I think we're going to get dsl for this one too, eventually...I have irc, AIM and MSN, incase anyone wants to use them while they're away....and, well, it's in san francisco, and it's IN the city, which is cooool. There's a lot to do, and I live about two blocks away from a bus stop. Depending on what house I'm at, I live near bart too. The weather is usually good (though foggy). I live about an hour and a half away from victor, (the LHF) so if you know him, we could get him to come here and have a party! I can give you a tour of the city (walking or bus..I'm 14, I dont drive), show you the not-so-touristy parts...I know i may seem weird that I want somewhat strangers to come visit me...but who cares!! I want people to come here, I'm a bit lonely.

Warnings: Not many. My room is messy, and that's somewhat easily fixed...if people are going to visit, I'll clean it best as I can. my parents are cool, but they can be spazzy. That's it, I think..

name: naomi ruth von umphress. the moth.

where: dallas, texas. hell.

when: in between now and later.

contact: le_jaseroque at hotmail.com

precisely why you should visit me instead of the whitworths or any other texan attractions: hehe.. no, not really. but for real, if you've got some growing hatred for the Whitworth women (which i'll truly sympathize for), and still wanna see all the Hot Texan Chicks, well damn don't forget about me. i've got a sweet little house with a black cat and a big bed, tons of good flicks, a nintendo (you may have to bribe my brother.. he likes oreos), and oh yeah a pretty MacG3 piece of shit. but really you should just come to see me, because i'm nice and i won't hit you or anything. plus, if you're a really hot boy then i'll pay for your meals! (that was a joke. you know how broke i am.) but on the more serious side... come visit me. please. i'm bored. and oh yeah, if i'm not entertaining enough for you, there's always brent and courtney and erin and aly milling aimlessly around the city. i could even throw you on a bus and send you to austin if you get really sick of me. i'm down with that. but for pete's sake, don't just drop by! contact me, dammit! i'm not that spontaneous or easy going! hell.

warnings: i sing a lot. i'm not very good. i look shitty in the mornings. i'm really really mean when i'm sleepy. i like to cuddle, but i tend to wake up on top of people. not to mention assume that people want to sleep with me. i'm really loud. i listen to my music 24/7. i don't normally hit people, but man, sometimes they just deserve it. seeya soon!

peace out. -moth

Name: Chris Black (Lorin, too, if he's home. Come to think of it, that applies to me as well. Better inquire before arriving.)

Location in the Space-Time continuum: Arkansaw, WI (Western edge of the state, halfway north-south)

Warning: yes, that would be nice. My parents like to know about these things...

Attractions: We're kinda out in the woods, so don't expect to hang at the mall unless you bring the means of transit. But, we got fields and woods to romp in and we can sing as loud as we want, we got clean air and good water and bright stars, and lotsa healthy food.

If you come: Do plan on being put to work at least some of the time, so bring clothes you can weed the garden or fix the shed or clean out greasy machines in for maximum enjoyment. You can pretty much sleep anywhere there's room for you. We have a couple extra beds, an extremely limited amount of floor space if we can find it under the junk, and 60 acres to camp on. Better check your Email before you get here- I'm typing this in the library 12 miles away.

Getting Here: We can probably arrange to pick you up at the bus station or train station. They are a bit of a drive (About 45 minutes to each), so unless you really want to walk, tell us when you are coming. I'm not sure how close you can get by freight train-the nearest tracks are 10 miles, but the train may not stop there.Hitchhiking could work if you are willing to wait for cars.Bikes can just ride straight to the doorstep, if the driveway lets you stay mounted.

Fair Warnings:

  • Our house features very little privacy-most of the room divisions are dressers and curtains. The shower is a watering can on a hook in the greenhouse. It is possible to change your shirt, but it helps not to be too uptight about people watching you sleep.
  • The "restroom" is a pit toilet outside, so you can see the stars on the way there.
  • In general, come prepared to deal with having junk strewn all over the place and and non-conventional lifestyles in force, and we can have a grand old time!

Name: Jennyrose and Miss Katelet

Place: 6 miles outside of Drain, Oregon in the lucious, green, tree-filled valley in the country. It really is beautiful. [Dont mind the *ahem* clearcuts on a couple of the hills.]

Attractions: Us radcore Oregonian Ernst girls, Oregon countryside [green grass in september!!], Our awesomely revamped artsy house and wonderful parents, an apple/pear orchard, and fat lovable kitties, a cutely manic rat, and a chow chow named Schatzy.

Fun stuff to do around here: Hop in puddles, take long walks up steep hills, there's a shallow part of the river nearby where you can go wading/swimming in the summetime, laugh and play games until wee hours of the morning, make food together, practice sarcasm, dance, roll around in the grassy yard, pick apples, pears, tomatoes and plums in the right seasons, etc.. Yay! Come come!

Bonus! we have a dump truck! yeah! go us!

Place: Spring ( suburb of Houston, TX )

How you can get there: drive, fly ( IAH is ten minutes from my house ) bus, probably train, and tho i'm not sure where the amtrak station is, i'm sure i could locate it.

The advertising: come see me!! there's tons of spiffy stuff to do here! galveston beach and boardwalk is only an hour away ( if you come in feb. there's mardi gras! yay! ) we have countless museums, the downtown area is great, we have a giant four-level mall if that's your thing, the most awesome parks and public gardens, an amusement park with rollercoasters and rides and activities ( i haven't been there yet...want to go and experience it together? ) or if you want to live on the wild side, there's drag racing...plus you can meet my bizarre but hella cool family and friends, not to mention our assorted animals! so visit! it'll be awesome!

name: EmilyOh place: Dallas, TX how you can get here: lots of ways. let me know if you're thinking of coming and i can help you look into it. -notice: let me know when you're thinking about it -why you should come: the whitworth clan and naomi are very close by and clark and david are just a hop, skip and a jump from where i am. i'm also only four hours from austin meca. you'll have fun, i'm cool, and i'm probably going to have a car soon. so come visit!

Name of host: Fiona

place: St. Paul, MN

how you can get there: However you want... bus stations, airports, train stations... all 20 minutes or less away from our house.

Whatcha' gotta do: Not much... either show up at my front door, unannounced, or call me (651.699.6811), or e-mail me anywhere from an hour to a day to a week to a month or more ahead of time.

Why you should come (though it should be obvious): Because you love me very much.

What we could do if you wanted: We're a 20 minute walk through scenic Highland Park to the Mississippi River, we could probably convince mom to take a day and-a-half trip to Lake Itasca, which would mean a few hours in the car, but it's a nice place anyways. We're veryvery close to the Mall Of America, and several skating rinks that I may or may not drag you to. We've got a very nice resevior, and plenty of busy intersections for public weirdness, and we could go bum around downtown St. Paul (or Minneapolis, whichever you prefer) and freak people out, or just... enjoy the city (ha).

Any warnings?: Yes. My brother being the main one... Our basement (where you would most likely be staying) is sort of wet at the moment, but we're fixing that! The bathroom in the basment is still under construction, though it'll (hopefully) be done in a few weeks. There will almost definately be SOMETHING under construction while you're here, because that's just the way we are. The house tends to be sort of a mess, but we're getting better- just don't expect Martha Stewart or anything. There are also a bunch of obnoxious schoolchildren down the block, but I'll do my VERY best to keep you away from them (or vice versa). Also, you may have to come babysitting with me, but most of the kids that I babysit for are really nice kids.

Well, that's about all.... so now get your BUTTS to http://www.amtrak.com or http://www.greyhound.com and get to my house soon. I'm very lonely and need people to visit me. Now. --Fiona

Name of host: courtney, erin & alyson whitworth (three in one!!)

why visiting us is an amazingly good idea: because we totally want visitors!! come one, come all! anytime, doesn't matter how many! our parents rock and don't mind people at all. you may stay for as long as you want, and we even have quite a bit of extra comfy sleeping spots, so floors aren't necessary, unless you specifically request them. we will show you around dallas because courtney will have a car by then. we will be crazy and have a blast, and you can meet all courtney's weirdo friends. adrian will probably be happy to give you an overall review and rating of the whole whitworth-visiting experience. thanks, and the sooner the better!

My parents are cool arty nice folks who are very accomodating. There are at least 50-75 cool teenage unschoolers I know here, and we hang out with my friends constantly. When you're in town attractive funny weird and wise friends will be in and out and spending the night constantly. There is tons to do in Austin all the time -- tons of good live music every night (we're the "live music capitol of the world"), homeschool events, outdoorsy places, plays, roller skating, cool shops and resteraunts, a huge college campus, art movie houses, and the infamous flipnotics coffeespace, down the street from my house. Name of host: Emma

Place: Austin, TX

How you can get there: Contact me at emma at members.limitless.org isf you wanna visit -- advance warning is a must, as I do need my 'rents' permission. :) I live in a rather boring part of Austin, but this is why we have cars and public transportation -- to go to the FUN parts, which aren't too far away.

Name of host: --Lotus

Place: Clayton, WI / St Paul, MN.

How you can get there: contact me at fretware at yahoo.com. most people come in from the cities, we're not too far from the MN WI border. theres also Grey Hound stops with in relatively close distance to the farm.

Gettogether: there is a small party planned for the 19th 20th & 21st of OCT. attendence is around 15 to 20 people, to be held on WAF (in WI) in the party house. to celebrate my 17th (ack!) Kats's belated 15th and chris's belated 18th birthdays / halloween. It IS a costume, so bring one, for the main night. And as always, come willing to take care of group chores, cook, dance, bring a musical instrement if you play any at all, a sleeping bag, and keep it clean; no illegal substances *at all* (this does not include Rylands famous "gingerail")

There is a larger get-together happening in late June or very early july of 2001 I'm expecting aproximately 35 unschoolers/unschooler type people. happening in the back woods on WAF. Camping (bring a tent), lasting 5 or 6 days. Contact me early for more info if your interested in attending.

Name: Marina and Ethan Moses

Place: Santa Barbara, CA

how you can get there: There's a Greyhound station and an Amtrack station about a 15 minute drive from my house, and an airport about a 25 minute drive away. We can pick you up at all three places.

how much warning we need: well... if you want Marina to request days off work, she needs two weeks warning. If you don't mind just hanging out while I'm at work, a couple days notice would be fine, although my parents would not be overjoyed about that... about a week's notice is preferable, especially if you want to fly in. The bus and train stations are close enough to my house that we can practically walk, or at least take the city bus.

Reasons to come: The weather. Today, January 23, is sunny, about 65 F with just a hint of a breeze off the ocean. This is not all that unusual. Whenever it rains here the local newspaper is plastered with headlines, "Pet Rat Drowned!! Houses Leaking!!! Beach Emptied!!!!" The city. Santa Barbara is a truely gorgeous place. It's a complete tourist trap, so the city passes all these laws about how houses can't look ugly, and you can't build anything over two stories, and you get extra points if whatever you want to build looks Historical and/or Hispanic. There's the beach, of course. There are several good sunning/swimming/surfing beaches within half an hour drive from my house. Downtown's really nice, very pedestrian oriented, and we can walk from my house in about 20 minutes. My parents. They had such a good time at my party, my mom's attitude is now "Yes! Invite your friends! Make them stay!" I don't know how long this miracle will last, so take advantage of it! :) Me! and my cable connection and fast computer, if you're into that kind of thing.

name of host: dan d and zach, two-in-one!

place: halifax, nova scotia

how you can get here: flying would probably be easier, but you can take the train.

what ya gotta do: contact me (and get your parents to contact mine, that always seems to help) a month or two before hand, you can contact me by my e-mail addy (au643 at chebucto.ns.ca) or you can call me, (e-mail me for my phone number, like wonderlust, I'm not to hot on the idea of putting my phone number on the web) and we'll work something out. :-)

why you should visit: because its so lovely here! you can walk to the harbor in less then half an hour, and drive to lovely beaches in under an hour, we have a huge park with lots of trees and old forts and stuff, I live near a boat club were you can rent canoes, kayaks, and sail boats for pretty cheap, and, if your coming from the usa, your money will be worth so much more, you could buy the city! :) please visit me! :)

How to get here: take the amtrak to chicago. take the commuter train to the suburbs. I'll meet you at the station.

Why you should come: Good question. Why DO you want to come? Why do you want to go anywhere? why don't you just sit around in front of the tv, watching chick flicks, and eating popcorn? They won't let you do that at your house? Oh. Well, come to my house. We do a lot of that.

Also, you could go downtown to all the musuems, Navy Pier, take me to the Opera House, Art institute, or visit the planes at OHare airport and decide you like them so much that you want to hop on one of them and go to Bath, England. I'll come too.

-Name: Jasmine

-Place: Warsaw, IN (northern)

-How to get here: Hell, I don't care. Freight trains, (actually I don't think we live that far from a freight place) hitch-hiking (although my parents may worry a lot when you try to leave) Greyhound comes here practically within walking distance of my house, Amtrak station in South Bend, airport about 3 hours away.

-Why come?: Geez, can't you guess? I mean, there's a whole bunch of Amish people that don't like me because I dyed my hair a while ago, a trillion churches, a homeschooling group that all thinks I'm a heathen... Oh wait, why you should come . . . uh, there's me! And there's a little theatre and its safe and a few neat coffee shops and it's a good midwest place (I think it should be mideast, but nobody listens) to crash for a day or to while changing coasts. E-mail me at roo at hoosierlink.net or call me or if you are really stuck somewhere--show up.

name:sarah compton

place:pennsylvania (outside of philly)

how to get here: trains, planes, busses, cars, feet, bikes...how ever you can make it.

the reasons to come: there's me and my sistser(rachel) right here in the same house and everything. dian's about 20 minutes away, laura's about 2 hours away, and so is jake. and we can all gather here to visit together. my house is kinda small, but as long as you don't mind floors, crowded beds, or trampolines to sleep on, it's all good. we can hang out here, at my house, and jump on the trampoline, go walking on the trails behind my house, listen to music, sleep, make and eat food..whatever. we can also jump on a train and head into the city of philadelphia, which can be fun. if you are here on a friday or saturday night, we'll go down to south street, which has coffee shops, restaraunts of all kinds, clothes, and tons of interesting people. it also has this beautiful glass and ceramic mural (philadelphia has the most murals out of any city, it think) and, for the highlight of our evening, we can go to Condom Kindom, which is always interesting. call me or rach and tell us when you'll be here...we'd love to have you.

[Wicked. Odds are that I'll be living in Ohio come summer, so we'll totally have to take advantage of the proximity. -Adam B]

Okay, I have a place of my own now.... yah! So, if anyone wants, they can come visit. No, wait.... I should put some limits on that... if anyone I know wants, they can come visit, but guys can't come stay alone (must bring female) because... because I'm silly and old fashioned and having a guy come sleep in my livingroom probably wouldn't go over good with my boyfriend.

Name: Christy (aka Sita-Hana) When: Sometime between January and the end of April. Where: a little city in Alberta. What to do while here: well, actually, I can't offer lots.... my little city in the middle of Alberta is a very peaceful place with nice walking (and rollerblading) paths. There's a neat coffeehouse to sit at, and a movie theatre, bowling alley, etc. You're welcome to sit in on some of my classes, if you want. If you like playing Pictionary, then I'll be delighted, and if you are good at Trivia Pursuit, then James will be happy.

Email me at Christy at smokylake.com.

Name: Katherine C., KitKat4208 at aol.com

Where: On a farmish place that's about 30 minutes from Knoxville, Tennessee.

Why?: Well, you want to see me don't you? ;) If you'd like to get some experience with animals, this is a very nice place for it. We have dogs, cats, chickens, ducks, horses, donkeys, a goose, and we'll have sheep and dairy goats sometime in the near future. If you don't like animals, then this isn't the place to be. There are a few really neat secluded areas in the woods that are perfect for just sitting and reflecting in. And, unless we're in the middle of winter, there's usually something interesting going on.

Stuff to do around here: We're relativley close to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and you can drive out to the Nantahala Forest or to the Pisgah Forest in a few hours, if hiking or kayaking is your type of thing. Nashville and Atlanta are 3 hours away, Chattanooga is 1 1/2 hours away, and Knoxville is 1/2 an hour away. If you get bored, you can always go to Pigeon Forge, which is where Dollywood and other disturbing things are located.

How you can get here: You can drive in with detailed instructions, or I can pick you up from the airport in Knoxville. Public transpotation isn't very good around here, so you're better off driving around than taking a bus.

Warnings: There are animals everywhere. If you can get away from the domesticated type, then you'll probably run into some type of wildlife. If you're allergic to cats or dogs, then you probably shouldn't stay here too long. Also, one of our dogs wasn't socialized too well as a pup, and therefore doesn't really like people showing up out of the blue. If you want to come, give me some notice in advance so I have him under control when you get here.

Name: Julia Orth

Where: New College of Sarasota, Florida. (It's on the Gulf Coast of Florida, a little South of Tampa.)

Attractions: Beautiful beaches, fun little city, ME!, Mote Marine lab, wild dolphins, New College in all its glory, botanical gardens, nice libraries, a hoaky car museum, bookstores...

When: Any time during the 'schoolyear' and some summers. Drop me a note!

Getting there: bus (I can definitely pick you up at the Sarasota Greyhound station), boat, plane (The Sarasota-Bradenton (SRQ) airport is like, two minutes walk from campus. They're right next to eachother. A $20 shuttle runs from the Tampa airport to Sarasota, or I could get someone to pick you up) hitch-hiking, freight hopping, road tripping, biking... you're unschoolers, you know how to travel!

Contact: julieclipse at nbtsc.org (preferably a few days in advance)

Other: Yes, you'd be staying in a college dorm, but no, it's not that bad. I live in a suite, four bedrooms connected to a mainroom/kitchen with two bathrooms... BUT I live with the love of my life, so we share a bedroom and use the extra room as a 'library/guestroom'. In other words, you'd get your own room!, complete with three bookshelves, a potted garden, two friendly pet rats, an art desk, a table loom, and a cozy couch with a pillow or two! Stay as long as you like (though if it's more than a week, I might ask you to chip in on food... and yes, there's an accessible organic market, and yes, I cook vegetarian/vegan.)

Name: Franny Bannen

Where: Out in the country in Wisconsin, not too far from St. Paul MN

Transportation: Well we aren't too far from a train station and there are bus stations and airports within an hour or so. if you want to drive e-amil me franban86 at yahoo.com. Best to let me know in advance too so I can let my parents know.

Why come: Well if you come in the summer there are woods to play in and strawberries to eat and all sorts of other exciting farm experiances. We have a brick oven in which we bake bread and pizza and we grow a lot of vegetables so there's plenty of good food to eat. You can meet my younger brothers, climb trees, ride bike, and a whole slew of other things. We do live quite far from a town with anything exciting, the nearest being about an hour away. I also don't live very far from Chris B. Ryland, Lotus, and Fiona so maybe you could see one of them.

Other: If you aren't at all interested in farm work you might not like it. There are always some little things that you could help with. you could get to bale hay, pick lettuce, transplant tomatoes, or bake bread. So if you like old fashoned farms you would love it here (I do).

Name: Eireann Young

Place: New Haven, Connecticut

How you get here: Amtrak and Greyhound both let you off near downtown, I can pick you up from there easily. If you wanna fly, you should probably go to Hartford and then bus down to New Haven. Hitchhiking could be hard in Connecticut, cuz people tend to be very uptight about who's in their cars ;) Freight-hopping is possible but not as easily done here as in other states.

Contact: wanderlust at nbtsc.org Please contact me at least a week in advance before you drop in, because I like to prepare for my guests a bit. However, you'll still be enjoyed on short notice.

Reasons to visit me: Besides me, of course ;) My versatile city, both incredibly beautiful and woefully ugly. We have museums, funky coffeeshops and bookstores, a lovely green downtown, the quiet suburb of Westville which is good for walking around at night, my Aikido dojo, THE little-cinema-that-could, mysterious alleyways, candy, strange people, beautiful people, ugly people, Yale University including a beautiful campus ground, tons of obscure places to explore, nightclubbing (not sophisticated like New York, but still fun), and a whole lot more.

Notes: We have extra bikes, and I think extra rollerblades as well.. so if that's your thing, come on down to my Bob's Discount -- oh wait a minute. Um. Anyway! Did I mention my incredible wit? I will be your stand-up comedian. Oh, also, I just quit my job at the office, so I plan to have a hell of a lot more free time. Which means less stress for both us.
