met a phor n.

  • Abbr. met., metaph. A figure of speech in which a word or phrase that ordinarily designates one thing is used to designate another, thus making an implicit comparison, as in "a sea of troubles" or "All the world's a stage" (Shakespeare).
  • One thing conceived as representing another; a symbol: "The high-rise garbage repository is a metaphor for both accomplishment and failure" (Richard Sever).

Middle English "methaphor", from Old French "metaphore", from Latin "metaphora", from Greek "transference", "metaphor", from "metapherein", "to transfer": meta-, meta- + pherein, to carry or "bear", as in children.

So -- "Metaphor" means "[carries] Double (or more) meanings"

A thought.

 perhaps metaphores
(like the common cold, and like this comparison)
are meant to come and go
(like spring, which will inevitably come but never stays long enough)
for metaphores are intended to be truths
(intent will catch up with you every time, like your shadow)
 and what truths
(truths are like fish, glints in the water and then lost)
 or falsehoods, for that matter
(falsehoods are just like truths, they too shall pass)
 are really meant
(meaning is slippery, like wet soap)
 to stay true
(nothing stays, even rocks eventually erode)
 for longer than a moment
(moments slip by, just like this comparison)
