| Wiki Public And What I Want |
Wiki
Rather then clutter up the message board under RecentChanges thought i would put this here.
The post left blank is an expample of why i want at lest part of Wiki Private. It's more then a message board and it's more then "just a web page". Like everything we do its building community stone by stone.
I personaliy am in favour of things that lead to trust, community, shareing, telling our stories and our truths. I dont want people who want to take part excluded, but i dont want random strangers, or those who would wish us harm, stumbling acroose my most private writings. I dont think criteria for who gets a login is tricky, I would like to see 2/3 of wiki free access anyway. Getting a login in my mind should entail nothing more then e-mailing someone your name e-mail addy and a passcode
the sequrity of the site doesnt worry me, its the sequrity of our writers, speakers, and listeners
I've signed every post I've ever put up on wiki. Some days that took more guts then others, and having a logic funtion wouldnt change what ive said or how ive said it.
I'd like to see part of Wiki seperate off so that you could acsess the very private writings, by login only. I believe we can, and should, have it both ways.
My humble two cents. or 5'000 turkish lire

To Clarify a few Thoughts-
That someone one day might pull of nbtsc.org/wiki and find "denyed acess" message come up breaks my heart. i DONT want the whole site under login, that sucks, and given a choice between all or nothing, i'd have to go with nothing.
When I said wiki was too public for me to sign my name, it's mostly because there are maybe 3 or 4 people I'd want to know that it was me writing that. I'm not quite ready to tell everyone yet, it's perfectly possible I'll never tell everyone, but I had to write it somewhere. I don't think it'd be good for wiki to get closed off from the public, even just parts of it. Like Zen said, it is a public website, and people know that when they post. It would be nice to have something more private, but I think that should be a different thing altogether, and we should leave wiki as it is. For the most part, it works this way.
I restate what I wrote on the RecentChanges message board:
As great as it would be if we could post stuff on Wiki and only have certain people see it, we have to be realistic here. Wiki is a public forum, and should continue to be used as such.
Basically what I'm getting at is this: It's up to YOU to decide if what you write on Wiki is something that you're willing to risk letting your parents/anyone-else-who-drops-by see. Wiki isn't monitored or elitist, and you know that when you post something, so you need to make that call. I'm sure that doing this will make some people feel censored and restricted ("Oh god, I can't post that, my mom might read it..."), and that sucks I know, but that's kind of the-way-it-isTM. If you really want to be able to post stuff and have full control over who sees it, then get yourself a Live Journal (www.livejournal.com) or something where you can do that, because Wiki really isn't the place for it.
I'm not trying to sound mean here or anything, I'm just saying that I think it'd be a shame if certain areas of Wiki got 'locked off' right now... I think it'd ruin part of the fun/random/interesting/deep/organic feeling Wiki has. Of course, what I'm saying mostly applies to the pages dealing with peoples feelings/actions and stuff. Locks on pages with contact information and travel info may be much more acceptable (And safe!)
I'd be interested to hear what the *icks think of all this also. I mean, we're not even sure 'locking off' parts of the site is a viable option (Though certinally do-able, may take a lot of work).
-Zen
all i'm asking is for travle info, self harm, eating dissorters, rape, drug abuse and any page you make that you want privet should be "locked off." mainly because
- 1 you have the right to have your page public or privet
- 2 it really sucks (not to mention is dangrouse) when you see something somone wrote and they didnt sing there name because wikis too public and they just talked about killing themself ... i am a kind loving compassionet human being and holy hell i hate seeing that. i for one don't want random strangers just waltsing around reading our brokon stories or party plans. they have not eirned the right nor do i feel confterble saying it with them. it is really importand for people to say stuff and feel confterble sing there name.
- and 3 as for the partypages i dont want every person on the web to know my phone number. as for the rest of the pages i want them open for the world to see.(but maybe toss the message board) well thats my canadain tunie

- I completely agree.
Emma
- I strongly disagree. Altho' it'd probably be nice to have the ability to make your pages public or private when you originally create them at some point, right now you totally do NOT have the right to change already-exisiting pages to make them private. Not at all. There are other places for that, and Wiki isn't it. Wiki isn't made for that. It's original conception (And Rick or Nick or whoever can correct me if I'm wrong here, but I don't believe I am) was never suppoed to be a private or elite thing. If you want it to be private, don't write it on Wiki. If you don't want other people to 'randomly' read it, again, do not write it on Wiki! The same goes for your phone number. I mean, you know the risks when you post something on Wiki, and if you don't like those risks, you probably shouldn't be posting it here. That's basically what it comes down to. On another note, if someone posted that they were going to kill themselves on one of the pages and didn't sign... well, if they were forced to make it known who they are they probably wouldn't have said that in the first place. So by creating a login situation we are effectivly censoring ourselves. Yes?

- Zen what's the problem with locking off those few pages? Everything else on wiki is public. I know personly I want to tell people when I'm not doing good and wiki is a damn good place! I don't want to have to go to LiveJournal to talk about rape, eating dissorters, self harm ect. I want to talk about those things HERE on WIKI! I do not want strangers coming on wiki and reading our poetry or our vews on sexualty or how bad somone cut the other day or about gay weddings or whatever the case may be. Granted I don't know how hard it will be doing this or if it's even possable but if it is then I think it would be a good step and if it doesnt turn out we could undo it right? love
Heather PS I am no geek. I noughing about how hard it might be to do this I just know as a poaster on some pritty fucken scary pages it would feel a lot better to know that wiki wikiers know and not every other human that just happens to walts on the page.
- honestly heather, i think it's pretty...well, stupid to put your phone number on a website. maybe just put your email address and say "email me for phone number"? i agree with the fact that people maybe should have the option to have their page be private. however, i think that discouraging people to wander in "off the street" and see what we're about is a really bad idea. i know that i for one wouldnt' have gone to NBTSC had i not come to wiki first and seen what a nifty group of people ya'll are. think of how many people have learned about unschooling, or nbtsc, and changed their lives because of that? i think it would be a crying shame to close our doors that way.

- Ok 1. i didn't poast my number dawn my sister did and yes i aggree in hindsight it wasnt that brightest of ideas. my main point is that pages even saying email address should be locked off because of spam. and yes it will become an issue if it hasnt already. 2. i've said it before and i'll say it again. all i want to "locked off" are the party pages and the "scary pages." they can still come on wiki and see all the other pages. wiki being toatly 100% locked off is a bad idea but i think those pages should be sepret for safty and confirt.
