scholarships

We really want to make the Dream House accessible to as many people as possible. We have, in fact, planned our entire vision around that idea, so that we expect to offer everyone who comes a great value for their money. But although we think $3000 is a great deal for 10 weeks at the Dream House, we also know that it is still a lot of money for some people. Therefore, each session we are pleased to present:

approximately five work trade scholarships, each worth $500, resulting in a total fee of $2500 rather than $3000

Two  $1750 scholarships, resulting in a total fee of $1250 rather than $3000.

On this page you can read a little more about each type of scholarship, and the boring-but-necessary technical details about deadlines, deposits, etc. Please read this stuff carefully if you are interested in a scholarship! Thanks.

about the $500 work trades

You work 80 hours for us in exchange for your $500 discount. We will work out a schedule with you that doesn't get in the way of your personal project or other things that are very important to you--you'll average about 8 hours per week.

The particular type of work to be done will depend on your skills, and might be anything--computer maintenance, assisting the resource coordinator in his research, babysitting, helping one of the staff members in their work (not necessarily Dream House work), washing windows, building shelves. In some cases, family members with skills helpful to the Dream House might perform some of this work.

about the $1750 scholarships

This scholarship actually includes a $500 work trade--like the worktraders, recipients of these larger scholarships will contribute 80 hours of work during their session. The additional $1250 is basically just free money. In our ideal world, when you grow up and get rich, you'll remember the dream house and send us some cash then, which we'll use to help out somebody else.

You must register for the Dream House in order to be considered for a scholarship.

In order to apply for a scholarship or a worktrade application, you must also register for the Dream House. Be sure to read the deposit information on the registration form carefully. You can choose to send in

a conditional registration form, in which you get your deposit back (and lose your space in the Dream House) if you don't receive a scholarship, or

an unconditional registration, in which you don't get your deposit back (but keep your space in the Dream House), even if you don't get a scholarship.

deadlines

$500 Worktrade applications: we have two deadlines for worktrade applications for each session. The first deadline is 3 months prior to the start of the session (July 9 for the first session). At this point we will award all the work trade positions and scholarships that our budget allows. However, we have a second deadline one month before the start of each session. At that point, we will reconsider any applications we turned down the first time, as well as any additional applications we have, IF we have additional money available.

$1750 scholarships: The deadline is 4 months prior to the start of the session (June 9 for the first session). We will let you know within one month (quicker if possible) whether you will receive a scholarship.

deposit information

People who apply for $500 work trade scholarships must send in the regular $1000 deposit. You can opt to have us return your entire deposit IF you don't receive a work-trade position.

If you are applying for one of our larger ($1750) scholarships, and can only attend the dream house if you receive one, you may pay a $500 deposit ($400 of which is refundable IF you cancel and the house fills up completely).

If you are applying for one of these $1750 scholarships but  will attend the Dream House whether or not you receive one, THEN you must still send in the regular a $1000 deposit.

Please be aware that if you pay your deposit with a credit card, you may lose money because of our 3.5% credit card surcharge: If you are applying for a scholarship and say that you will ONLY join  the Dream House if you receive a scholarship, if you do not receive a scholarship then we will refund the main part of your deposit but not the 3.5% credit card surcharge.

Confused? See the money section of our registration form. We've tried, there, to spell this all out clearly and in a slightly different way from here. Email us or give us a call if you still don't understand it.

Can you apply for both scholarships?

Yes. If you do, we will assume that your first preference is the $1750 scholarship. If you don't receive that one, we'll go ahead and consider you for a work-trade.  In fact, to make your life easier, you can just fill out the $1750 application and mark on it that you want us to consider you for a $500 work-trade as well.

Sorry, you can't receive a double-scholarship; you may get a $1750 scholarship or a $500 worktrade, or neither.... but not both.

We may ask for more information

We expect to be able to make our decisions based on the information in the scholarship and work trade applications, but we may need to contact you for additional information.

Scholarships for local non-resident members

We also expect to have several work-trade scholarships available to our local non-resident members. Their value will range from $250-$875, which means you would pay a total of $675-$1250. Recipients of these scholarships will contribute 40-80 work-trade hours to the Dream House. Sorry, we don't have details ready yet. If you're interested let us know and we'll hurry up on the application.
