In the joy of being in my body
I have forgotten
the day when I was scared
of the candy aisle of the grocery store
sugar was a forbiden addiction to me
something I wanted even if
I wouldn't let myself have it.
I would reach for the bags
of tempting colors and textures
I would feel the crisp cellophane
and draw back
when I thought of going to the beach
and feeling lost and like I was standing
on the diving board
and everyone was staring at me
staring at my stomach, my legs
and I told myself
"it doesn't have to be like that"
I can control that feeling
and so I leave the store
without the taste of gummy worms
on my tongue
and I'm still scared
of diving boards.
