Those Little Things About Yourself

Everyone has those little things that you know may annoy other people, or that they just habitually do. List 'em!

Elizabeth's annoying habits:

• I wear crimson lipstick and insist on kissing people, thus leaving a mark on their cheeks.
• I play really loud music when my family is trying to go to sleep or just waking up.
• I read murder mysteries and then insist on telling the plots in all their gruesome glory to anyone within earshot.
• Like someone mentioned, I leave orange juice cartons, food packages, etc., with only a teeny tiny bit left ("Who, me? No, I didn't finish it!")
• I get up in the morning and whine until the mail comes and then complain if I didn't get any letters.
• I talk all the time. Talk talk talk talk talk talk talk. I won't shut up.
• I befriend strangers and wave to people I don't know, much to the embarrassment of my introverted family members.
• I sing. Not well.

• I cut pizza with scissors
• I read the comics first and the world news second
• I dislike wearing skirts, they leave me feeling very exposed.
• I like to drink chai tea and hot chocolate, mixed.
• I am perpetually ten minutes early
• I was once a nun for halloween
• I habitually speak diplomatic and politically correct English, on the other hand, I also swear a hell of a lot.
• I dislike rural darkness, but am comfortible in city dark.
• The more people around, the less energy I have.
• Chocolate is my poison of choice
• Blood and guts don't bother me.

• I am a sucker for anything on a computer screen and know that this is one of my weaknesses.
• I spend far too much time online.
• I am great at making up excuses when I don't want to do something, and they usually work.
• I love to cook and clean, but only with other people or when its not in my own home.
• I worry about my appearance.
• I care too much about others opinions of me.
• I love to memorize worthless little bits of trivia. Particularly anything that has to do with math.
• I procrastinate unless somebody else is expecting something from me, and that somebody is not a family member.
• I constantly worry about the well being of other human beings, even strangers on the street.
• I like to earn money, and then have trouble spending it. A lot of trouble spending it.
• I am frugal with my own money, but not when a family member is footing the bill.
• I try to save too much, and then end up throwing out stuff I shouldn't have in trying to cut down on the stuff I save, and keep the worthless things I really shouldn't have saved.
• I have a sarcastic wit that only my family is exposed to.
• I am a clean freak, but can resign to the state of dirtiness when there is no other option.
• I love to have things organized, but can find items very quickly in a total state of chaos.
• I am shy and quiet in overwhelming crowds or places, unless I am with people I am comfortable with or trust.
• I am compulsive about returning phone calls, emails and letters.
• I say social niceities to people who often don't deserve them.
• I am slightly offended when a person does not return a phone call or email.
• I try to make other peoples lives too easy and nice sometimes.
• I look at the different perspective too often.
• I am a pessimist except when surrounded by pessimists, then I turn into an optimist.
• I am concious of everything I do, and usually think about it before I do it.
• I rarely act on impulse.
• I am a realist
• I am cautious.
• I respect the limits of others, but pay no heed to my own personal endurance.

I use intensity, and radical honesty to shield myself from people. I try to control how other people see of me, in the hopes that I will be able to control how they love me. [1] I leave. I leave before other people can. I fear intamacy at the same time as i chase it. I leave dirty socks around. I leave the wrong cd in the wrong case. I tend to push people around.

• I like to fix other people...like brush back their hair when it's in the way or straighten their clothes, except I don't usually because what if they *gasp* looked at me funny?
• I say "well" alot...wait, actually, I don't
• I think things about people that I should tell them but rarely do
• I like it when you play with my hair...if you do it like your petting a cat, not planting gardenias
• I share too much of myself
• I eat your food, drink your tea, spill it sometimes and pretend you did it

• I don't believe in types and change mine frequently
• I expect people to cry more
• I twirl the bathwatre alternating with my right and left first fingers when it's going down the drain so it makes a little whirlpool
• I generally step outside for a breath of fresh air, particularly during thunderstorms
• I may forget your name, but never fear, I'll make one up for you
• I expect other people to be friendly
• I want to hug you

• I doubt that people love me even when I know full well that they do (I'm not fishing for compliments. don't reply to this. really.)
• I don't wipe off the cutting board before I push it back in
• I always forget to throw the spice packets from Ramen noodles away
• I put back boxes of cereal that don't have enough for another bowl
• I put back orange juice containers with only a drop or two left in them.
• I forget to lock car doors (!!)
• I bite my nails
• I chew on the insides of my cheeks
• I crack my knuckles
• I move all the furniture around in the living room so I can dance, and I forget to move it back.
• I double-pack cds
• I pick at scabs
• I forget to turn the oven off after cooking
• I talk too much
• I scratch my head even when it doesn't itch
• I don't brush my hair every day
• I let my room get really messy
• I fight constantly with my little brother (he starts them!)
• I blame my little brother for all the fights we have
• I don't call people often enough
• I'm really picky about a lot of things (for example, when I go shopping, I try on about 300 pairs of pants and then only like one because one's buttons are too small, or the belt loops are too big, or I don't like how the zipper glides...)
• I'm constantly re-doing my webpage
• I rarely remember birthdays, etc.
• Sometimes when I read books, I'll be thinking about something else entirely, but I keep turning pages, so I end up five chapters ahead of myself
• I leave the lights on in my room
• I don't re-file my dad's cds (they're in alphabetical order, and if he has more than one by the same artist, they're in order of release date)
• I save EVERYTHING - corsages from Jr. Royalty coronation, ribbons from packages, envelopes, letters, magazines, movie stubs, programs, etc.
• I delete half of the NBTSC list mail I recieve *ducks*
• I don't write people back when they write to me *ducks again*
• I have to go... I'll add more later.

• i am a slow worker
• i have a really annoying laugh
• i act too little-sistery sometimes

• i deal with heavy-duty emotion in a really wierd way; i store it in my head for a while, then let the implications trickle in, then deal with that, etc until i have it all under control & can look at it "logically."

I love these details. In the last few months, in the process of getting to know the people I've fallen in love with, they've come up so frequently that it's turned into a stock phrase. "Thing number #468 to know about Whoever". It's darn useful stuff to know! A modification: These details facinate me, about myself, my loves, my friends, the stranger sitting next to me on the sky-train. But I want to know the good stuff too. The quirks that don't bug you. The ones you're proud of, whether that feels right or not. The little twists that makes a personality unique are skattered all through - positive and negitive. • I use a shoulder rest so high that no one else can play my violin.
• I know more about antomy than I realise.
• The only person I'm really comfortible being upset with is myself.
• When I'm bored, I read, or people-watch, or write. In that order.
• If I care for you, you can influence me effectivly about most things.
• I get pretty snooty about music sometimes, but the reasoning behind it is sound.
• I like my hands, and I baby them.
• I make an excellent stir-fry sauce.
• I dislike 60% of green veggies.
• I am shy. Would raather aa good session of talking deep aand getting inside another person's head, than a joky social stuation.

• i've gotten away with a lot based on natural talent. (this sounds so stuck up but i have to be honest here anyway.... ;o))
• i make wishes on everything - the time (11:11, 7:11, 1:23, 2:34. 3:45, etc), daisies, railroad tracks, eyelashes, tunnels, graveyards, bridges, slugbugs, cars with one headlight, pink cars, yellow cars, feathers, the moon, the stars, etc etc.
• i always wish for the same thing.

• i check my voicemail compulsively.
• i always write the most on things like this!
• i think i'm a really selfish and self-centered person.

• I can't make friends immediately. Most times it takes me years (or camp) to become good friends with someone.
• If I start to open up to someone and I detect the slightest bit of rejection (like, miniscule. Invisible.) I close up. Like a clam. Fast and hard.
• I very rarely go out of my way for anything or anyone.
• I'm lazy and I procrastinate everything.
• I can almost always see at least two sides to every situation
• I'm always willing to believe the best about people.
• If someone hurts me, which happens very rarely because of the above quirk, I'm very very slow to forgive. Often I don't show that I'm angry or hurt, I just close off. Walk away.
• I don't like to cook.
• Sometimes I think I'm amazing and wonderful and a genius and stunningly gorgeous. Sometimes I think I'm crap.
• I'm shy. Really. Everywhere except at camp or with other really good friends I don't say a thing. I fade into the walls as much as I can.
• I love playing music. I hate that I'm not as good as I want to be.
• I don't mind being messy. Except when I'm eating, then I constantly wipe my hands and mouth with napkins... constantly because I'm a messy eater. :)
• I hate calling people on the phone. I always get queasy before I dial. I don't really mind just talking on the phone though... except I always pace. I cannot sit still while talking on the phone.
• I can't understand why I get A's in my city college classes.
• I love watching people and laughing at them. Not at them, really... but people are so funny!
• I love reacting seriously to a bad joke. It totally turns it around and then the jokes on them. I have a couple friends where we can go back and forth with bad joke and serious response for... quite a long time, and have a ball.
• I like puns. Even though I double over and groan at really bad ones.
• I have a hard time replying to emails.
• Every once in a while I'm really mean to people. I overshoot the jokey-insult mark. I don't mean it...
• I'm fairly egotistical, but I've been working on that.
• I type fast and like to get words spelled right.
• I'm not sure if I eventually want to be a parent because my parents are so wonderful, and I've still gone through a lot of hell with them. I don't know how I could do better.
• I think raising children is the most important job in the world.
• I'm almost always ready for a philosophical discussion.
• My favorite thing in the world to do is learn something.
• I never know what to do when a friend is feeling bad.

• I obsess about learning the right lyrics to a song before I sing along.
• i like playing with silly putty, snapping easter eggs open and shut, clicking the button at the end of a pen...over and over.

• I have more travel toothbrushes than I really need
• I get really excited about raglan-sleeved shirts
• I prefer sharpening pencils with a little handheld sharpener than sticking them in a pencil sharpener
• I keep a box of 7 lipbalms near my bed
• I really like toasters
• Clay hates me. Kilns hate me. I am not fond of working with ceramics, but I love when the finished products turns out great.

• I love the way quarters feel when you hold them tight in your hand.
• I want to get a tattoo of a character from a children's picture book
• I like tortilla chips a lot more than potato chips
• Once I tried to make sandals out of newspapers.

• I add to lists like this when I'm bored
• I sometimes put my toenail clippings into glasses that have been used already, and this has led to tragedy on at least one ocassion
• Even though I'm not butch, I can pull it off with amazing style sometimes
• I talk to myself like I'm talking to a little kid when I'm by myself
• I have an obsession with little stuffed animals - I can never give them up!
• Every time I run with my backpack on, I pretend I'm a horse. I can even here the jingling of my saddle as I canter along.
• I also hear jingling saddles and hoofbeats every time I look at horse pictures.
• When somebody says "China", I hear a loud boooooooooooooong inside my head
• I never cut spaghetti, and I don't coil it up much, so when I eat it I have to tilt my head way back and hold the ends of the strands over my head. Bad things happen if one drops.
• One of my favorite things to do is sit in coffee shops and wave and smile at people I don't know, so I can see what they do.
• I have at least 20 t-shirts, but I only wear about 5, and I wear them for at least 4 days at a time.
• I have one designated pair of underwear I use when I'm on my period, and it's brown. Very.
• I never wash my contacts. Once I went to the eye doctor because I was getting a lot of headaches, and he told me to wash my contacts more. The sad thing is, it worked.
• I like to nickname people, and even if you don't think I have a nickname for you, I probably do and you haven't heard about it yet.
• I can't lie worth a damn, and sometimes that gets me into trouble.
• If I can get away with it, I make fun of my "superiors" without any mercy whatsoever.
• I hate tomatoes and artichoke hearts and raisins and spicy stuff. But I insist I'm not a picky eater.
• I once won an award in fourth grade for being the best valentine maker in the class.
• My little toenails are really weird, and they come off if they're hit with any real force.
• I like to smell things, even weird smelling things, and usually the "grosser" they are, the better I like their smell.
• I almost never button my shirts up right the first time.
• I never change the strings on my viola.
• I think semicolons are really cool.
• My hands are always cold, except when I'm somewhere that's actually cold and then I hate gloves because my hands get too hot.
• I keep dead pens, thinking that they'll somehow revive themselves, so my house has millions of pens in it, but none of them work.
• I'm fiercely loyal, sometimes to the point of stupidity.
• And likewise, once you're on my bad list, you'd better watch your step.
• I'm a little in love with all my girlfriends.
• If you're a guy friend, and you're close to me, I think of you as a girlfriend until I remember otherwise.
• I'm obsessive about my paint brushes. I hide them from everybody else and you have to ask my permission to use them or I get pissed.
• I'm vicious and good at playing games, but I'll do anything to get you to play with me, including bribe you.
• I like to make little bitty things. I do almost anything two sizes smaller than normal, including crochet and sculpting.
• I like to wear other people's clothing, and I treasure anything I have that belonged to someone else.
• I'm a packrat to the max.
• Bubbles are one of the most fascinating things I can think of.
• I will spend the rest of this evening thinking up more things for this list.

• I read the sexy parts of books over again if I like them. heh.
• I am secretly in love with pictures of myself, but I'm always too embarresed to admit because I don't want to look like I'm vain or something.
• My fingers have their own secret agendas. They like to type 'ing' and 'ed' onto the ends of completely random words.
• If I am wearing a hat, it's almost always because I was too lazy to take a shower or brush my hair.
• Invariably, no matter how well I'm doing in school, I believe I'm getting grades at least one letter lower than I am.
• My favorite thing in the whole world to do is surprise people, with visits, with packages, whatever.
• And I secretly wish people would surprise me with things like that too.
• I drive people absolutely nuts because I put one song on repeat and leave it that way for hours, until I get sick of the song, and then I move on to the next one.
• Even though I'm renouned for being messy, I have a passion for alphabetizing things. After I alphabetize them, they either sit around or I slowly destroy the order so I can do it all over again.
• When I'm on IRC, I only use grammer as good as the other person is bothering with. If you don't capitalize your words, I won't either, but if you do, I suddenly become Miss Well-Spoken.

• I leave water glasses all around the house.
• I leave hair brushes lying around.
• I think spelling is a sign of education, and think that those people who make no attempt at correcting their spelling are uneducated.
• I can become totally fascinated with all sorts of things, to the point of obsession.
• I don't listen to music much, but when I do, I tend to listen to the same ten musicians over and over.
• I love referencing to books, philosophers or historic situations.
• Language, particularily the German language, facinates me.
• I don't wear a backpack, and totally abuse whatever bag I'm carrying.
• Through studying history I create a whole imaginary (although, to the best of my ability, historically accurate) imaginary world.
• I want to understand things, but am training myself to also be able to memorize things.
• Right now I'm going through a phase where I'm really not that tolerant.
• I like dressing in what I feel looks good, but hate shopping, and feel guilty spending money on clothing, so I tend to wear the same four outfits all the time.
• I blame others for not fitting into my image of how the world should be.
• I don't need everyone to like me.
• I used to think that being shy meant being scared of talking or doing things, and that because I wasn't scared of talking or doing things, it meant I wasn't shy. I've realized since that I am shy... that before, I didn't care at all what people thought, so I wasn't inhibited, but now... when I care more, I am shy.

• i am much, much, much better on paper than i am in person
• i am a major klutz, & my hands shake, & i'll almost invariably get a stomache ache when i'm nervous.
• when i'm particularily nervous, i'll most likely stick my nose in my journal & start drawing, making sure to not meet anyone's eyes
• about once a month i am struck by a major fit of insecurity, & start questioning if any of my friends really like me, & if they do, "can i trust them to not be insane?"
• when crushed out, i take things waaaay too seriously. way way way too seriously.
• i obsess over my hair. all. the. time.
• i sleep in fetal position, hence waking up with a backache almost every morning.
• when i'm sick, i turn into a major drama queen, snuffling around in my blanket looking as down-in-the-dumps as humanly possible.
• i am obsessed with being "fair."
• if you are a friend of mine, i have probably written a poem/song/drawn a picture/taken a photo while thinking about you.
• i am constantly craving a connection with people.
• i obsess over being too egotistical. do you think it's egotistical to do this list? yugh.
• i can be down-right cruel to my guy friends.
• i talk about movies alot, & think about them more than that.
• i talk like a valley girl, & say things like "smurg" "marf" "yugh" "snarf" etc all the time. i describe being hyperactive as "running around like a manic rat."
• if i wear a shirt that shows my stomache i'll probably slouch a lot more/have my arms wrapped around my stomache all the time.
