Unschoolers Computer Killing Club

Are you sick of your computer screwing up your life?[1] Are you sick of hating your computer constantly? Are you sick of your computer in general? Then this is the "club" for you. Put your name, and the offense(s) of your computer, and we can all console each other and wrestle sledghammers from each other's fists.

founders FionaIsRad and PapRika (shameless advertising for our AllSoRad pages? yes! of course!)

My computer (of whom I have dubbed Mr. Kolbenkopf (Mister because I prefer to think of it as a male, as it screws up all the time, hahaha(this is not related to BoysHateMe, I swear)) has recetnly started to open thumbnails in our default image program instead of in Internet Explorer and for some reason on my status bar, when I hover over a link, it says "shortcut to blah blah at www.nbtsc.org, instead of just saying the URL. <grits teeth>

 --Ali
  • While I don't know about thumbnails, if you go to the options for internet explorer, you can turn off "show friendly locations" or sommat like that, and it'll give you your URLs again. (Damn MS! Hiding stuff from it's users!) --Ari
  • Shortcuts etc. >> Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Uncheck Show friendly URLs Opening in wrong program. >> Open My Computer. View > Folder Options -> File Types. Chances are your thumbnails are Jpgs, so scroll through the list until you find something that says anything about Jpegs. (Jpeg Image, Internet Image, Whatever-Editor-You-Have Jpg, something like that) Click edit. Content Type (mime): image/jpeg Default extension for content type: .jpeg actions: open. Highlight Open click Edit. Application used to perform action: usually = 'c:\progra~1\intern~1\iexplore.exe' -nohome (use the quotes!) Check 'Use Dde' Dde Message: 'file:%1',,1,,,,, (use only one quote!) Application: IExplore Topic: WWW_OpenUrl - Hope this helps... --altruistkFallacy
    • I did manage to get that fixed a while back, but now GIFs are screwing up. They show up on all pages, but if I click a link directly to a GIF (example: http://www.nbtsc.org/ali/blah.gif) it will show an activeX box and nothing more. Me and Adam D. spent hours trying to figure it out with no avail. blah. --Ali
      • Sounds like an overly aggresive setup program has associated itself with *.gif. My suggestion is to brows around your hard drive untill you find a GIF file, then select it (e.g. single click) then hold down Shift and Right Click on the icon, then from the menu select "Open With" then from the dialog that pops up, select whatever viewer/editor you usualy use... -- Neal [2]

unless someone would like my old computer, I am thinking of useing the mother bord, and whatever else is left, for target practice, then starting it on fire... anyone got a match? --Ryland

  • I've always thought computers and sledgehammers sounded like a good mix... can I help...? --marina

my computer can bit me. its retarted. poor thing --Heather

My computer is responsible for being stupid and unfixable and slow and basically mean and uncaring. *rushes at her computer with a sledgehammer and a pick axe, but stops herself just in time* --Fiona

I agree with the above post by co-founder FionaIsRad. Computers deserve to be assassinated. Proverbailly, of course. --Ali

My opinion of computers is going steadily downhill. I've considered joining the Lead Pencil Club (read the book), but then I'd miss out on this website, and a few others that are interesting. - Nikki

Do printers count? They are, after all, part of the whole computer-hating experience.

My stupid printer has decided it doesn't want to move the little printing ink-holder thingy, and so I have no way of getting a hard copy of anything (unless I want to write stuff by hand). And of course this occurs right after X-mas, when I'm going to be printing out information for agility equipment. *kicks her stupid printer*

And even if it decided that it was in the mood to print for me, the computer would find some way to screw up the information sent to it because he (his name is Skinner) hates me.

-Katherine

  • Murphy Two (or is it three?) won't print... again!
  • My c-drive space ran out.
 and....
  • My computer ate my homework! Just like the Goddess, and the Dog, and the tornado, and my little sister.......

~Eire

December 24th, my computer crashes. Can you think of a more miserable day for it to crash? No computer repair places open for at least a few days.... and what to do... for Christmas I recieve computer programs, which sit unopened beside that life-less computer.

Two days of attempting to give my computer life-support. I open it in safe mode, attempt to convince it to co-operate. I disable any programs which open automatically, hoping that the cause of my computer's total refusal to open windows has to do with one of the programs. I debate reinstalling windows, but that can't be done through safe-mode. I try reformating the hard drive, but my harddrive refuses. I defragment the drive, I check for errors, I run whatever kind of scans on it I can...

Three days of checking email only once a day, redirecting my email through a hotmail account on my mom's computer. Three days of wondering, will I need to buy a new part? Will repairs cost much?

(this little adventure isn't over.... not yet.... not yet.... but I had to share it, anyway... - Christy)

I hate to say it folks, but this is a totally ridiculous page... I mean think about it! Sorry, its just the whole web page about hating computers that struck me as silly. I'll stop laughing now *snicker*. - Jonah

  • That's the point. Glad we made it obvious.
  • Jeez, I didn't even think about that aspect of it until you pointed it out. Sometimes I think this cold weather is freezing my brain. -Katherine

My computer hasn't behaved for 3 months and it's awful. Tomrorrow I move hard drives (AAAAAAAAA) and let's not even speak of my printer. If this doesn't work I'm just flying Rick out to my place to fix it.

Shippy

[1] first off, if your life is that dependant on your computer.... no comment.

[2] Prehaps this sort of problem should be moved to a page for technical help, if such a page already exists, please change this link from TechHelp to what ever the existing page might be. -- Neal
