Workshops For N B T S C2001

post your plans for NBTSC 2001 here!

1. Self-Injury Discussion, courtesy of Heather and Eireann. We're thinking, ideally, it should be a small group (ten people or under) for each workshop (around two or three workshops in the course of the week, prolly), in an isolated place, and hopefully as non-triggering as possible. Anyone have further suggestions?

2. Basic Aikido / self-defense. I could really use a co-leader for this one, especially if a large group of people showed up. I would help people learn how to fall without getting hurt, how to break from common grabs, do some basic Aikido techniques.

Anyone interested in these?

--Eireann

I'm going to do a workshop in what I've studied most dedicatedly here at massage school the last 8 months: Hackysack! ;-) ~z~

I'm going to do a PoetryMarathon workshop, and go about organizing a Poetry Slam. Depending on how much interest there is in the Slam, we might have enough for a whole tournament!

my question is this: should i offer it as a workshop or just start it spur of the moment one night, or.. is there a better way to do it? i can see a Poetry Slam being a very involved, large thing, that might take up more time than just a workshop would. any suggestions?

--RoyaBoya

What's everybody think of these ideas? (Quick! I gotta decide and send in my stuff soon!)

  • Play Reading/Discussion
  • Juggling
  • Theatre Improv Games
  • Radical Dishonesty (anybody remember that? It was a spontaneous workshop at session one '99... I know Michae was there, Robin F. was I think, Charlie maybe, either Zack or Stuart... Howzabout a revival?)
    • Yeah, that was much fun. Sadly, we didn't do it again this year. Maybe we should just lie randomly. -- Charlie

And these are ones I'm interested in, but probably would like to attend rather than leading them myself. Anyone want to lead them?

  • Travel Resources/Stories/Tips
  • Unschooling Activism
  • Vegetarianism

Let me know what sounds interesting! -Emerie

  • you can never have enough improv.
  • for us poor firsttimers, what is radical dishonesty?

--RoyaBoya

    • Radical Dishonesty was, well, just what it sounds like. We all went around introducing ourselves using false names, etc... Eventually it sort of descended into simple opposites-speak (e.g., "Hey you! We'd absolutely hate it if you joined our Radical Dishonesty workshop!") It was fun.... -Emerie

i have no creative ideas for a workshop... what if i "led" a game of hide-and-seek, red rover, freeze tag, duck-duck-goose.. or something like that/alloftheabove? would anyone show? --Mari

  • sounds good to me! I love those games :) --Eireann

i was thinking something along the lines of cutting? what do you think? --Heather

yo everybuggy, i was thinking of doing a BitchBox workshop, where we can just talk aboot anything that is bothering us or anything. just whatever. tell me what ya'll thinkies. glitterpixie

  • Oooh...at Marina's party, a small group of us were feeling down, and we all went out onto a balcony and talked about the things bugging us. And we had a really good conversation. I have the feeling it works best in small groups, but I wouldn't know. But yeah...in conclusion, cool. :) - Emma

has summer ever done a visual journaling workshop? i was looking at it on her website and it looks pretty cool. --EmilyOh

Hmmmm. BodyImage workshop discussion? Is that a good idea? How about jazz dance? -Emma cool! good idea do the body image one..or the jazz one they both sound cool --Heather

  • Yes, doing the body image one would be great! I'd come ~Eire

As I usually try to do, I'll attempt to do workshops on 3 of my Very favorite subjects; A Book Discussion (mm hm.) a Religion Discussion (yup) and a Chess Tourney (eh.) ;-). I can never manage to get all three done for some reason though. Also I thought Alex's workshop at session 2 this year titled "The Meaning of Life, etc" was very excellente and I'd do that also if noone else gets to it first ~ Danopian

I'm thinking of a spinning workshop. I'm thinking pretty far in advance here, huh? I've got about 11 more months before next years camp. I miss camp. But anyway, a workshop on how to turn fiber into yarn. Anybody interested? Maybe followed by a knitting workshop? I think a chopstick compition or something might be fun too. -Kathleen

Hey cool! Spinning was what I did for my workshop the first year I went to camp (watch Tessa get all sentimental). Word of advice, I wasn't expecting many people to come, but about twelve showed up. So you might want to either have people sign up, or have lots and lots of spindles. -Tessa

I'll bring a good number of them, but if I don't bring enough, people can make their own. I've heard putting a pencil through a potato works fairly well, and I've seen a drop spindle made out of a dowel and a couple cds. But i should be able to get plenty of drop spindles. :) It'll be fun. -Kathleen

  • I'd certainly go to a spinning workshop. I'm getting sheep soon, and I want to learn to spin the fleece into wool myself intsead of just selling all of it. Still thinking about doing it? -Katherine

i was thinking of possibly doing a discussion on growing up, since there are so many 'adult' campers. my mom asked me what the 18 year old campers were doing, and i really didn't have much of an answer. traveling... a few people are going to college... looking for internships... getting jobs... so i was thinking of having a discussion of what people are doing or planning or looking forward to, and how. maybe. --marina

  • Hey, I would love to come and listen to that, Marina! That's a great idea. I'll look forward to it. I rarely feel good in my decisions to do anything because I'm afraid I'm not seeing all the possibilities. So this would be great, seeing what everyone else is doing and maybe what I could do too. Right on, girlie. ~Jasmine~
  • This could only be a good thing --Eireann

or how bout a jumprope contest! see who can jump the most times, who can jump fastest longest, who can do the most tricks, who can run in and out the most consistantly, which team can jump longest... who knows the most stupid jump rope rhymes... :) --marina again

or maybe an Origami and Paper Crane Making workshop. We could try to make 1000 paper cranes over two weeks and then maybe John and Margaret would let us put them on strings and hang them up in the lodge... --marina yet again

  • that sounds like fun :) maybe people could bring different kinds of paper to make cranes out of, like candy wrappers and foil. (mari)

Yes!!! I know what workshop I want to teach next year! I didn't teach one this year, which kind of makes me mad, but I think it was sort of for the best anyway, as I was new and slightly frazzled and overwhelmed, and I just wanted to sort of take in everything with as little pressure for me as possible. OK, but ANYway... I'm going to teach sewing next year!!! I think it will be so incredible. We can have all sorts of cool fabric and patterns, and make whatever we want! I'm very happy and excited about it. The only problem is getting a sewing machine to use at camp, but I suppose that will work itself out... Becky J.

  • Kickass! :D I have a nice sewing machine, but I'm very reluctant to lug it all the way to Oregon next year..hmm.. - Emma

I've got a fairly portable one, but it'd still be a big bother to get it to camp and back. -Kathleen

  • Could you rent a portable one in Eugene, or rent one in Eugene and have it delivered?

Yeah...sewing machines are a huge pain to lug around. Maybe I'll just teach a really simple sewing workshop where we all just make a tank top and sew it by hand or something. But then I'd have to get a ton of nice fabric. Or maybe I'll do a sewing slash decorating your clothes workshop...lots of glitter paint, non-washable markers, appliques (sp), jewels, etc., so we can go totally crazy and decorate all of our jeans, skirts, tops, whatever!! ~Becky~

  • that sounds really cool! I'd love to decorate all my boring clothes and stuff. --marina
  • roya thinks that would be realllly kickass too. yay for decoration.
  • Cool! Someone could bring ribbon, too, to sew on jeans. You know the kind with designs woven in? Maybe I will! :) --Carrie
*That would be fun. Very good idea. I'll come! -Kathleen

I've been thinking about doing a Clicker Training workshop, but I dunno if anyone would want to attend. Has anyone done a workshop their first year of camp?

-Katherine

Yes, of course! And are you talking about clicker training, as in for dogs? I do that with my dog, Riley. Too cool! -Robyn

Yep, the kind used with dogs is what I'm talking about. It isn't just for dogs, though. I've done it with horses, cats, and donkeys, too. Yay for clickers! -Katherine

primitive skills workshop (if I do this, I hope to do it with Scott) tarot/occult workshop scrap book workshop color pencil art(twould be cool)

--JesseBorges

  • Yay! Tarot/Occult is something I know virtually nothing about, but have been mildly interested in for quite some time. If you teach it, I'll come!

~Becky~

I need some ideas. I think I'll look through the 2000 archives and see if I
get inspired.

[1] I believe the proper spelling of that is duck tape. At least here, if not anywhere else in the world. :)

  • well, sorrrrrrrrrrrrry! :-) I'll try and do better next time. Do you think you can find it in your heart to forgive me? -JessicaSkater
