Debate About Metaphore Whores Two

{here's all the debate stuff}

I just had the first part of a conversation on this on IRC. here's the log: MetaphoreWhoresTwoLog1; Feel free to join in later when Kat gets back. --Ari

Instead of putting down a name and then everyone adding metaphores, etc, how about the other way around? Such as:

[snipped]

Okay, I deleted the "beautiful, talented, etc" part of this, because it doesn't seem to fit here... I'm saving it in notepad, so I'll put it back if anyone disagrees with what I've done... but I think what's being done below works a lot better. ~Eire

  • dude! that's not cool! put it back!!! -Katgrrl
  • the creator of the page and a bunch of other people don't like it, so I think it should stay gone. It just seems like one of those things that can really hurt people who aren't included...
  • Just put the frickin thing back just I'm sure people who don't have stuff on this page can frickin deal with it dude! I don't have anything on this page I don't give shit! -NickV
  • yo! just put it back the people who don't like it can just not look at it! -robby
    • Arr. Don't you twinks read how bad it can be? Arr. --Ari
    • Okay, okay I'll put it back, but you'll have to wait until tomorrow or something because I'm at my dad's and won't be able to access the notepad file until I get on my own computer again. So yeah. Soon. ~Eire
    • No! Don't put it back up! If some people find it constricting, then we should respect that. - Naela
        • no, that's not right. you shouldn't take away from the enjoyment of others just because you don't approve of something. NO ONE IS FORCING YOU TO LOOK AT THIS!! i mean, god. if it bothers you that much, if it makes you feel like you're being put into a box, DON'T LOOK AT IT. to just say 'i don't like this' and to take it down is taking away from the right to free speech, from other's right to express themselves, and that's stupid and wrong. -Katgrrl
          • You value your free expression more than other people's hurt? Whether they should be hurt or not is fairly irrelevant if you ask me. It does hurt. --Ari
    • Haven't you read ThatsNotMeDamnit? People are very bothered by this, and they've said so loudly and clearly. - Naela
  • Yeah but a whole bunch of people (including me)have also said loudly and clearly that they want it back. correcdt me if i'm wrong but the page wasn't created to put in boxes it was created for people to say the couple of features that they saw as most prominent about a ceratain person. please put it back. -robby
      • What it was created for is sorta irrelevant... you touch a hot pot to move it, it still burns you... so you stop it, whether or not your purpose was to be burned. --Ari
    • Of course it wasn't created to put people in boxes, but it may have that effect anyway. - Naela
  • Sigh, this is wierd. I've mentally flipped back and forth several times on what I think of the issue of pages which end up hurting other people. Should people be asked to remove things which hurt others? I know I've asked for such things in the past... but now, I don't know. Tonight I was reading from "The Soul of Man Under Socialism" by OscarWilde, and came across the line "Selfishness is not living as one wishes to live, it is asking others to live as one wishes to live." So... I'm sure you guys can see how this relates to the issue of this webpage. Now, my further question, is whether by even posting this quote here, I am being selfish too or not. Perhaps, I am because seeing the brilliance in this line I think "hey, wouldn't it be neat if everyone followed it", but then, on the other hand, I think I can let go of the results... say, I'll post it here because its interesting and others might find it insightful, meaningful, etc, but I don't really care if people listen to it or not... :) Hope you guys all have, not necessarily a good day, but whatever type of day you crave, being the wonderful Individual people you are. - Christy
  • There you go, it's back up. ~Eire

but is Beautiful really a metaphor for jake? i mean sure he's some hot shit, but a metaphore? according to dictionary.com (http://www.dictionary.com/cgi-bin/dict.pl?term=metaphor) a metaphor is:

1.Abbr. met., metaph. A figure of speech in which a word or phrase that ordinarily designates one thing is used to designate another, thus making an implicit comparison, as in “a sea of troubles” or “All the world's a stage” (Shakespeare).

so really thats kinda in-acurate, as you would ordinarily describe jake as beautiful (or as they say in the vernacular, some hot shit). it would be more acurate to say: “a sea of jakes”, or “all the jake's a stage”. - cory

  • Jasmine hides sheepishly and feels dumb.
  • no no it's a cool idea. it works well with the way MetaphoreWhores is going now.. but i, and i know a few other people, contest the way people use descriptive words instead of metaphors (in MetaphoreWhores 1). so if something else similar were to start, i think it would be bad to start it on the same faulty-definition-of-a-metaphor footing that the original has taken on. la. - cory

Robyn, in an honest mood, decides to just say what she thinks

Um, I think this is a bad idea. Like a real bad idea. It reinforces every stereotype about each person listed (or not). At least, my intial reaction when I saw my name under 'childlike' but not 'strong' was disapointment.... like 'oh, so nobody sees me as strong but me'. And I know better than to do that. I think one word labeling adjectives to describe people catagorizes them, boxes them, and generally makes them feel bad. Can't we all be strong, glittery, comforting, and artistic? - Ranting Robyn

And, I wouldn't even want people to label me some of those things. Seductive? No thanks.

  • Jasmine is really regretting her decision to push save and would like to erase this page. Any objections? I don't want to erase it and then have the people that already added people's name above me offended or upset. So...objections? If not, it's going. I'm sorry, Robyn, etc.

Now, now, wait a minute. I like Eire's idea a lot, and the concept of yours, just not the execution....I see not a lot wrong with comparing people to alleyways and smoke, I just hate words like talented and smart to describe people, especially not when not everyone gets put on those lists....but the idea is fine. I'd like to keep the page. Anyone else's opinions?

 -Robyn

Please don't erase it, Jasmine! I really really do like this idea, though I think comparing people to objects or events is better than comparing them to attributes. I think this could really take off. So yeah, keep it! ~Eire~

Do y'all think we should just delete the Talented, Beautiful, etc. metaphores and start over, so this page isn't a big clutter of stuff being used and stuff not being used? (jasmine, i also really like your idea, but i can also see the problems with it. it isn't that YOUR IDEA was bad. it's that the way people are, it isn't ideal to have it laid out this way)... jenla
