apprenticeships&internships

staff

Your director is Grace Llewellyn, director of Not Back to School Camp and author of The Teenage Liberation Handbook. She is assisted mainly by Taber Shadburne, co-director of NBTSC, and also by 2 or 3 other skilled, wonderful adults who will work part-time to support the Dreamers. Also, two new apprentices and one new intern will bring fresh energy each session.

On this page you can read about the roles staffers will fill, and about some of the particular people on staff.

Goals and Dreams coach

She'll meet with all the dreamers about once a week—a little more at the beginning and end of the session—guiding you through the process of choosing a project, building it up from a vague simple idea into an inspiring clear vision, turning it into an action plan, actually making it happen, and bringing it to completion. Other staffers may also contribute to the “goals and dreams” workshops also.

Your goals and dreams coach is Grace Llewellyn, director of the Dream House and of Not Back to School Camp, and author of The Teenage Liberation Handbook.

Conflict and Communication Coach

Our intuitive and wise guy will attend weekly house meetings, helping people move from conflict to cooperation and clarity. He’ll also give workshops in: how to ask for what you want, forgiveness, making agreements, “big talk” (as opposed to “small talk”), and stuff like that. And he’ll occasionally meet individually with people who are having conflicts and prefer not to work things out in the presence of the whole group.

Our CCC is Taber Shadburne, co-director of Not Back to School Camp and a seasoned therapist, personal growth workshop leader, and Radical Honesty master trainer.

Houseparent(s)

Houseparent(s) have two main roles: they're a nurturing, stablizing force, and they're your “living skills coaches.” In the first role, they'll hug you when you want hugged, make you herbal tea or call the doctor when you're sick, remind people to do their chores so the house stays clean and welcoming. In the second role, they'll teach you how to do stuff like cook, garden, grow sprouts, clean, shop, understand nutrition, dry food, perhaps make jam or can food, etc. Stuff like that. Houseparents live at the Dream House, while the other three main staffers do not. Depending on which session you attend, you may  have an individual person or a couple as your houseparent(s).

For at least the first two sessions, we are thrilled to announce that Kyla Wetherell will fill this position. Many of you know Kyla as an advisor and cook at Not Back to School Camp, or from her essay in Real Lives: eleven teenagers who don’t go to school

If you are a fun, nurturing individual or a stable couple age 25+, and are interested in applying to work as a Dream Houseparent, email or snail mail us to say so.

opportunity coach

This innovative, imaginative, and knowledgeable person will be your link to people and possibilities in the Bay Area. He'll help you hook up with people and organizations who have expertise in your interests--for classes, events, workshops, volunteer positions, apprenticeships, internships, jobs, informal meetings, etc. Each week he'll give a brief presentation on some of the coolest things going on in the area, and tell specific individuals about events related to their interests. He'll explain how to use the local public transportation system, orient you to the neighborhood, and explain the layout and best features of the overall Bay Area. And, he'll keep the house stocked with all kinds of local calendars, newspapers, and schedules.  We would love to hear from you if you are interested in filling this position—you must be resourceful, outgoing, innovative, energetic, and familiar with the Bay Area.

Apprentices and Interns

Each session, 2 apprentices and 1 intern will join us. They'll help out with all kinds of things, from teaching workshops to running errands to taking care of sick people. Interns will also complete a project of their own design that benefits the Dream House. If you're 21 years of age or older and interested in applying for one of these positions, click here.
